building frames in Derby for over 50
years and our standards for accuracy
in building and the finest finishes
available are known by enthusiasts
throughout the world. Our Company
name Mercian can be traced back into
history of bygone days - we are
situated in the ancient Kingdom of
Mercia-the capital being Repton - now
a village a few miles south of Derby and
famous for its public school. Naturally
the people of Mercia were called
Mercians. Every Mercian frame is built
from the world renowned Reynolds
double butted tubing, and each frame
is hand made one at a time by one
craftsman. No factory production line
methods are used and so each Mercian
frame is consistent in quality and finish.
Every tube used on the frame is hand
mitred, so that the internal joints on
each frame are a perfect fit.
Each frame is sprayed to customers
choice and is then oven-baked to give
the most durable finish known. After
hand lining and transfers, the frame is
given acoat of clear varnish for a lasting
finish.
Mercian frames can be finished in any
colour from our range of over sixty
colours — if your choice is not shown,
then we can do almost any colour if a
sample is supplied with the order.
Enamel finishes can be had in almost
any colour, but the other finishes can
only be in the colours shown.
Polychromatic colours have a metallic
effect and our flamboyant finishes are
a translucent colour on top of a silver
undercoat. Our Italian Pearl finishes
have a metal flake effect and have to
be seen in sunshine to appreciate the
beautiful effect of this finish. Each frame
is then checked before despatch and
each Mercian craftsman is conscious
of quality control, taking great pride in
the frame we produce.

Audax Special =
Our Audax Special model has been specially designed for the Audax cyclist who
rides Audax events at all distances. The frame is built with Reynolds ‘531’
“Competition” tubing and has the latest short point Italian lugs with heart cutouts.
The frame is built with closer clearances, allowing mudguards to be used with
39mm/49mm allen key brakes.

TJowist Tandem
After many years of planning and testing, Mercian Cycles are now able to offer
one of the finest frames ever produced. The machines handling, workmanship,
and finish are the finest available. The design is extremely responsive yet
comfortable, making it suitable for racing as well as touring. The frame is of
bronze welded construction throughout, thus enabling over sized double butted
tubing to be used for added rigidity. Our tandem frames are all made by one of
ourtop craftsmen, and each frame is handmade to customer’s own requirements.

Super Fourtst
The Super Tourist Tandem is ideal for extended tours with heavy loads. This
model has a bracing tube from the centre of the head through to the rear seat
tube with extra stays brazed onto the seat stays above the rear ends. This design
is ideal for larger frame sizes for added rigidity, but is not practical on small
frames as the head tube is not big enough for the extra bracing tube. On frames
with different seat tube size, the top tubes are sloped in a direct line, as this
design is more rigid. Customers should note that top tube measurements are
measured in a horizontal plane, as on a solo frame, and not along a sloping top
tube.

In an age of mass-production, it is rather pleasing to find a frame with intricate
hand cut lugwork as on our Vincitore touring model. Our craftsmen spend many
hours cutting and filing the Vincitore lugs from blank lugs, and the result is a
distinctive frame that is not available from any other manufacturer in the world.

Professional
Our Professional model has a unique spearpoint bottom bracket shell that is
rarely found on other makes of frames. The long spearpoints are steel welded
onto the bottom bracket shell before the frame is built, and this makes an extremely
rigid frame, unlike other makes where a spearpoint is brazed on after the frame is
made, and only has a cosmetic value. The frame is built with special hand filed
Prugnat Italian lugs.

Recently introduced to the Mercian range for the rider who likes his frame to be
lightened by drilling the lugs, but atthe same time, requires a touch of individuality
that other frames lack. All the long point lugs are hand cut with a stylish clover
leaf. The Strada Speciale also has the seat stays fitted to the rear of the seat tube
and an allen key seat lug fitting is included.

Superlight
Our Superlight model is built with hand cut lugs, which are cut away in a unique
style. Every unnecessary part is cut away from the lugs, which look barely enough
to support the frame. The design makes a light and responsive racing frame. The
model is built with the popular fastback seat stays for extra lightness, and an
allen key seat lug is included on this model.

Pro Lugless

Our Pro Lugless model will appeal to the rider who requires an extremely
responsive racing frame. This model is built with the lighter Reynolds ‘653’ tubing
and the lugless style offers greater flexibility of design to the discerning rider.
Another advantage of lugless frames is that they are lighter, as conventional lugs
are not required. Building lugless frames requires greater skills than lugged frames,
and Mercian are well know for the high standard of bronze welding expertise.
The forks have the Cinelli aero investment cast fork crown and the overall smooth
appearance of the Pro Lugless model is very appealing.

Sow Profile
The Low Profile model is the latest introduction to the Mercian range. The frame
is built in lugless style from the lighter Reynolds ‘653’ tubing and the aerodynamic
style offers less wind resistance. The lugless style, although more time consuming
to build, has the advantages of greater flexibility of design, and therefore can be
built to any size and specification. The frame is fitted with fastback seatstays for
extra lightness, and the fork has the Cinelli Aero investment cast fork crown. The
machine gives a fantastic ride and has to be ridden to be appreciated.

Our King of Mercia Tourist is te most popular model in our range of custom built
touring frames. The frame is built with the Italian short point lugs, with heart
cutouts, which are finely filed. The forks are built with the Romani semi sloping
fork crown, but a Cinelli investment cast crown can be used at extra cost.

Our King of Mercia Racing model is designed for the racing enthusiast who must
have the best. Each frame is hand built one at a time by one of our craftsmen,
unlike many other makes of a similar price range which are ‘production line made’.
The forks are fitted with the Romani semi-sloping crown together with new
continental oval fork blades. The seat stays have Mercian engraved on the top
eye which is outlined in contrast.

Miss Mercian
Our Miss Mercian model is one of the few custom built ladies frames available
today. The lugs for ladies frames of the quality that Mercian require are no longer
available, so our craftsmen custom make the lugs for this frame. The price of this
model reflects this extra care taken in building the frame, but the end result is a
masterpiece not available from any other source.

Classic
Our Classic frame is a recent addition to the Mercian range. The frame and forks
are built from the Reynolds ‘531’ “Special Tourist” double butted tubing. The
frame is built with Italian short point lugs and Campagnolo ends. The Classic is a
lively touring frame and has the usual Mercian high quality workmanship not
usually seen on frames of this price.

Dear Customer,
Thank you for your enquiry received today and we are enclosing our latest
catalogue and price lists for Mercian frames, cycles, and renovations.
Mercian frames have been made in our own workshops in Derby for over
fifty years and are well known for their accuracy in construction and
quality in finish. We can re-enamel any make of frame and full details
about our renovation service are shown in the enclosed leaflet.
Our delivery period for new frames is now 2 months with an extra month
required for chrome plating. Personal callers are welcome to visit
our showroom at Alvaston, where we have an extensive display of our
frames and cycles. We also have a new clothing boutique which has
an excellent choice of clothing and shoes. Our showroom at the
address above is open from 9.00am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday;
9.00am - 5.00pm on Saturday; CLOSED ALL DAY WEDNESDAY AND SUNDAY.
Here our sales staff, who are active cyclists themselves. will be able
to advise you of any technical points in the building of your new
frame and we are sure that you will benefit from their experience.
If you wish to order your frame by post. it would assist us if you
could fill in the enclosed Frame Specification Form. If you are
unsure of some of the measurements or brazed on fittings. just write
a few notes on the reverse of the order telling us the type of riding
that you require the frame for and the type of equipment that you will
be using. We shall require a minimum deposit of £100-00 with a frame
order and a £100 deposit with a cycle order. The easiest way to pay
for your frame is by Credit Card. We accept Visa and Mastercard -
just quote your credit card number and card expiry date. We also
accept payment by Sterling cheque - your bank will advise you of this
For overseas customers, frames are sent by Air Parcel Post, and the cost
of this including insurance is £30-00 per frame to Europe, £40-00 to
Canada and the USA and £45-00 to Australia.

TOURIST TANDEM FRAME
Our tandems are built trom Keynolds 531 oversize tubing using bronze
welded lugless construction, and in the Double Diamond design. This
configuration gives a responsive yet rigid frame, adequate for most
touring needs. Seat tubes are heavy duty Tor 2/.00 seat pillars.
Cantilever brake brazings with strong rear brake hanger, incorporating
an adjuster, brake cable stops and guides, two sets of bottle bosses,
and all gear brazıngs are included ın the price. Fitted with an alloy
bottom bracket eccentric. Rear end spaced at 140mm. Finished ın any
colour of your choice with contrasting head and seat tube bands. Lugs
lined and Mercian transters. Any additional braze ons are extra as

DIGEST
SUPER TOURIST TANDEM FRAME - £9 + VAT £1086-87( INC. VAT)
Claimec to be even more rigid than the Double Diamond. Thıs model
has a bracıng tube from tne centre of the head through to the rear
seat tube with extra stays brazed onto the seat stays above the
rear ends. This model 1s generally recommended for expedition
touring. Braze on fittings are as for the Tourist model. It
is not practical to build this model in a smaller size than 22"

Similar to our Super Tourist Model. The main aifference is that
the 28.6mm tube from the head 1s brazed to the rear bottom bracket
shell and then a brace tube 1s brazed in from the front seat Lug
with extra stays onto the seat stays.
Our 531 Tandems are recognised as the leading machines in the country and our
specification has evolved from many years of tandem riding in many countries
and over varying terrain. Contrary to various media ideas, from our own
experience we find that two Campagnolo cantilever brakes give adequate stopping
power tor light touring. Our tandem machines are designed on this basis.
However, we do supply the rear wheel spaced at 140mm and threaded on the lett
side to enable the fitting of a screw on Hope disc brake, should you find it
necessary for more braking power. This certainly would be needed tor heavier
rıders and also for expedition touring. if youdo require a third brake we
recommend that it should be operated by an independent Lever. Using a twin
brake Lever only serves to reauce the stopping capacity of both brakes which
it operates. This is the most likely reason behind the motive for fitting
yet more brakes. The brazed on fittings to work a disc brake are available
at extra cost. Unfortunately both the Hope Disc and the Arai Drum brake
require rather more space than the Campagnolo cassette hub allows for - these
will only fit if a Hope tandem cassette hub 1s used in place of the original
Campagnolo.
Our preference is to supply top of the range machines of high quality and
durability. However, we recognise a demand tor an economy machine and
nave selected components which we feel should meet this demand with very
little compromise.

The Mercian Classic is a lively ana responsive touring machine built from Reynolds 531
double butted Special Tourist tubing using Campagnolo ends with wheel alignment
adjusters. The frame used for this complete machine has the following brazed on

double down tube gear Lever bosses; cable tunnels under the bottom bracket; chain-

Our Shimano specification machine has good quality equipment at a realistic price. The
Shimano RX100 Dual Pivot brakes provide very impressive stopping power, and we have
even used these. brakes on our tandems in hilly terrain with no problems!

MERCIAN '853' PRO LUGLESS
We are now able to offer the Mercian Pro Lugless model in the new
Reynolds '853' tubing. This is another prestige product from
Reynolds and is claimed to make the most rigid frameset available.
The main advantage of Reynolds '853' tubing is its ability to air
harden after the tube jointing process. This unique air hardening
property of Reynolds '853' provides additional stiffness at the
joints, giving a stifter frame with excellent fatigue strength and
responsiveness. An additional advantage of '853' tubing is that
as the tube surface is so hard, minor denting damage caused by
surface impact is reduced.
